Girmitiya Council is a cultural and research organisation dedicated to preserving the history, language, literature, and global legacy of Girmitiya (indentured) communities across India and the diaspora.

What does the term “Girmitiya” mean?

“Girmitiya” refers to Indians who migrated overseas under indenture agreements between the 19th and early 20th centuries, carrying with them Hindi, Bhojpuri, culture, and traditions to countries like Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, and Trinidad.

What kind of research does Girmitiya Council focus on?

The Council focuses on migration studies, global Hindi and Bhojpuri research, oral histories, diaspora literature, archival documentation, and cultural diplomacy related to Girmitiya communities.

What is the objective of World Hindi Day programmes?

World Hindi Day programmes aim to highlight Hindi’s journey from a people’s language (Janbhasha) to a global language (Vishvabhasha), while showcasing diaspora contributions and promoting academic and cultural dialogue.
